Topic 5: Saving energy and light bulbs
Aim - Make a circuit
Equipment - clip wires , battery , voltmeter , switch and lamp station
Method - Use clip wires and connect the clip wires to the battery and lamp station
also try to connect the switch to the lamp station.
Result - We tried using our method but it didn’t work so we got help from Mrs Shammer.
We got help from Mrs Shammer because we couldn't control the lamp station with the switch.

Who invented the first light bulb?
Thomas edison
What is a light bulb made of ?
Two rods
Filament
Tungsten
How hot is a light bulb ?
3600 degrees fahrenheit
It is so hot you can fry a egg
Compact bulb?
A compact bulb is made if filament
This bulb also fits any socket
Gas in a compact bulb?
Mercury vapor
Mercury vapor can be found in thermometers
You can touch a Led light bulb when it is on because led bulbs produce
less heat.
Led bulbs are made of elections
Leds can be found anywhere such as you computer , microwave etc any thing the
produces light has a led.
Led light bulbs can last 15 years of longer

A led bulb has the same shape as a incandescent bulb.

Science - plastic

Science Topic 2 :Plastic
For topic 2 we got given a few pieces of paper and we had to sort it out.
We had to sort out the strips of paper in positive, negative and neutral.
We also learnt about the different types of plastic we had
biodegradable plastic , reusable plastic and compost plastic etc. Before we went to
our science class we got told to bring plastic. We later used the plastic in a experiment
we had to sort the plastic in 7 different groups which represent the different 7 symbols.
  1. Plastic bottles (water,soft ,drinks,cooking oil)
  2. Milk containers,cleaning agents,shampoo bottles,bleach bottles.
  3. Plastic piping , vinyl flooring , cabin insulation ,roof sheeting
  4. Plastic bags ,food wrapping (eg.bread ,fruit ,vegetables)
  5. Bottle lids,food tubs,houseware,medical,rope,automobile parts
  6. Food takeaway containers, plastic cutlery ,egg tray
  7. Water cooler bottle ,baby cups ,fiberglass.
My group had to sort all sorts of different things  into the 7 different groups of symbols.

Topic 3 :Earthworms
What I know about Earthworms?
  1. I know earthworms live in the dirt
  2. Earthworms have no bones
  3. Earthworms are slimy
What I know about earthworms now?
  1. When earthworms dig in the soil they contract and relax their bodys
  2. Earthworms are hermaphrodite
(Meaning they are both genders in one body)
  1. Earthworms are very good for the soil because they help
give the soil air
  1. If you mix mustard powder and water and pour
it on dirt it will irritate
the earthworms and make the earthworms come to the surface
  1. Earthworms come to the surface when it is raining
(Because the holes they make will close up)
  1. Every earthworm has a clitellum and that is were
 they carry their eggs
  1. Earthworms can carry 1-20 eggs in their clitellum
  2. Earthworms are full with a fluid called coelomic

Science topic 4:Save energy

What do you know about saving energy in your house?
  1. I know that the less energy you use the less money the electricity bill is
How does your family save energy in your house?
  1. My family limits how much electricity we use everyday
  2. We off any electronic device that we don’t use
  3. We try to use as lest electricity as we can
  4. We limit how much time you have a hot shower.

Places that use electricity
  1. Factories
  2. Takeaways / fast foods
  3. Hospitals
  4. Shopping malls
  5. Car dealerships
  6. Movie theatres
  7. Houses
  8. Schools
  9. Shops
  10. Police officers

Things that use electricity
  1. Devices
  2. Ovens / microwaves
  3. Wifi
  4. Light bulbs
  5. Washing machines
  6. Dishwasher
  7. Water heater
  8. Fan /Heater
  9. Chargers
  10. Fridge
Aim - Make a circuit
Equipment - Battery wire lamp station
Methods - First we saw that the short wire was the negative wire then
we connected it to the positive part of the battery and did the same with
the positive wire
Result-In result we got the lamp station to light up but the lamp station was
a little bit lose so we got given another lamp station

Research about ~ Alexandra Dempsey

What does she do as a scientist ? She finds information about a place and she finds
out the best spots to find certain things. She also takes photos of things she finds interesting
and studies about it .

When she was young she loved going to the beach and finding things (shells, sea animals ,etc)
and she always wanted to know all about the things she found at the beach. She has also wanted
to be a marine biologist her whole life.

In high school she focused on math and science she loved to join classes that all involve science.

Her two people that she looks up to for  inspiration are Sylvia Earle and Dr Eugenie Clark.

How did she become a scientist ? She was working there as a volunteer and when they saw
her work and what she could do they offered her the job and she accepted it and that is how she
became a marine biologist

Her advice was that the more experience you have and the harder you work is how you
get your dream job .She said "the harder you work the more missions you go on".

What is rewarding for her as a scientist? She gets to have her dream job and she loves her job.

Next we watched a video in a article
About students who had to do a experiment in Wellington

The first group of students did an experiment to see if the size or weight changed the length of how
far the ball went.

The next group of students did an experiment to see which cloth absorbed the bacteria
called Salmonella the chux yellow cloth got rid of most of the bacteria on the egg.

Lastly the last student did an experiment to see if your personality changes you blood pressure.
He made about 70 people do a personality survey.
.(etc of a question How often do you hangout with your friends)
